Artist Statement/
Art is everything. As I’ve grown as a photographer, I think I’ve started transitioning from a “artistic photographer” to an “artist.” What I mean is that I feel like I’ve started “responding” to the world rather than just “capturing” it.
Now I can’t say that I don’t still make artistic images for enjoyments sake, but I think I am starting to see things that I didn’t before, and moving my imagery more toward commentary than just “art” feels very natural.
I’ve developed a “look” throughout my years in the local scene, and it’s always nice when someone comments that “it looks like Eric’s work.” Toy and macro style work has become my calling card. I love giving inanimate objects a personality, emotion, weight, and even life. I find that angles and color are most important when doing this. I may not get it right everytime, but the images I create speak to me, and I think it’s very important that they do. If an artist isn’t happy with their work, why would anyone else be?
I am looking forward to growing more into a multimedia artist with my interactive (crowd-sourced coloring!), dimensional (Mounted and “Stuffed” Hunting Series!), community (mentoring!), and traditional (Linoleum work coming soon!) works. The world is moving so fast these days that information and the assimilation of ideas, theories, and realities have put the population in a sea-change. I see this as a call to artists everywhere: “get busy.”
